I am Simon Richard Rowson (born 1963), son of Harold Richard Rowson (1920-2009) and grandson of John Thomas Rowson (dates?) both of Edmonton, London. I have (had?) a sister, Lynda Iris Rowson (married name Brown). As you can probably tell, we weren't a very close family but, before I sign out, I'd like to hear from any direct relatives who may be out there.

Hello, my name is Paul Rowson, I was born in 1963 and I live in Adelaide, South Australia. I left the UK in 2005 to start a new life here with my family. I believe my grandfather, (John or Jack Rowson) came from the North London area and that he left his wife, (Doris Violet Doyle/ Bulgin?) and two children in the 1950s (my father and my auntie). I understand that he might have started a new family with someone else. He died in the late 1990s. Have you any information?

Rowsons in Lincolnshire and beyondDate posted:10th Jan 2012, 15:14
From: Jim
I am researching my wife's great grandfather Robert Wilson Rowson. He was born in 1821 in East Kirby, Lincs., got a BA at Trinity College Dublin and became a schoolmaster in Shropshire. He was ordained a priest in 1854 and became vicar of Aylesby in N Lincs. He married Joanna Toft in 1867 and they had 5 children including my wife's grandmother Diana. Unfortunately Joanna died in 1876 and this led to his downfall. In 1878 he was arrested for drunkenness and later was given 3 months hard labour for stealing an overcoat. In the next year or so, leaving his children behind, he goes to Tasmania where in 1880 he marries a 20 year old called Mary Moebus. They have a child and he is next found teaching in Wanganui, NZ where he has an altercation with the Education Board. The next I find that he has returned to the UK where he died of TB (probably) in Stockport in 1892. I have more detailed information about the above as well as descendents and antecedents if anyone is interested, and would be interested if anyone has any more information on this colourful life!

Mary Ann RowsonDate posted:19th Dec 2017, 03:10
From: Richard Hansen
Hi there I'm a descendant of Mary Ann Rowson's living in NZ. Her daughter, Eona Smith was my Grandmother. We are trying to ascertain the history pf my Grandmother's family, and it gets a little complex, opaque and "interesting" around Mary Ann (Maime) Smith / Parker (nee Rowson) and her progeny. Certainly the background given on this website doesn't match the oral history we have from my Grandmother (who was estranged from her family) or the formal written documentation in NZ on Mary Ann (Maime) Rowson, but as she resided in New Plymouth, Taranaki, NZ all her life I think there is a high likelihood we are talking about the same person. Mary Ann Smith (born Rowson) was born on month day 1876, to Henry Rowson and Mary Rowson (born Jackson). Henry was born in 1837, in Rothwell, Lincolshire. Mary was born in 1843, in Grimsby, Lincolnshire. Mary Ann Rowson was originally married to George Parker originally from Chatham, Kent, England.(Source: Public Source), George was a volunteer fireman fireman who died in 1902, as a result of contracting tetanus after stepping on a rusty nail after attending a large fire at the Commonweath Hotel, New Plymouth. Mary Ann then went on to marry John Charles Smith, who was a son of Edward Metcalf Smith, MP for Taranaki and a notable historic figure in the Taranki oil and steel industry. John was born on September 3 1871, in Wellington, NZ. John and Mary Ann had one daughter: Alice Joan Casey (born Smith). Mary passed away in 1959, at age 83. My Grandmother had 5 brothers and sisters apparently. I know one of them from Gordon Henry James Parker Born 1 May 1896 (New Plymouth) - Died 22 March 1978 Auckland. The other children were Jean , Charlie, who died in his 40s (in the war?). and then there was Gerogina (Ina)... but we are having trouble tracking this lot down.... There may have been one illegitimate child which has led to some obfuscation of facts and historical documentation. Aaaah the joys of Victorian life. Looking forward to your reply Richard Hansen

Thomas later married Ann or Annie from Culcheth and had a son John in about 1822. I can't find any marriage details or records of other children. Hello Robert I am trying to trace a John James Rowson who is connected to my family and came across the Rowson website and your post from last year. I know very little about what I believe to be my John James except he did serve in India in 1911 and was in The King’s Royal Rifle Corps. His wife Harriet Ellen was with him and 2 children, Charles John and James Edward (born in India). I believe they had another child, a daughter Mary Emily Isabella born in 1913 again in India. Mary is how I become connected to the Rowson’s. John James age is noted as 29 which would have made him bc1882 and so he would have been 37 in 1918. Looking at the military records I note that your ancestor was 41 (so bc 1877?) when he sadly died but was noted as being the husband of Hellen Rowson. Of course there could be 2 John James in the same regiment but I do wonder if somehow the record was incorrectly transcribed and it said H Ellen and not Hellen? Some of my Rowson’s ended up in Fremont, California and are still there we also very similar names elsewhere so I can’t help thinking there might be a connection. Does the name Mary Emily Isabella Rowson born in India in 1913 ring any bells with you? If you could contact me and let me know your thoughts I would be most grateful at least I can then rule out your particular clan if it turns out we are not connected. Thanks so much, Audrey

He did not know he was adopted until early adult, when he began to use his real name. His father was also called Thomas. He was an organist at the famous church in Shrewsbury. My GG was born out of wedlock, the result of an affair. He had at least one half sister, who I think was called Beatrice Maud. My GG did meet his half sister and his Grandfather, but I believe it was just once. It would be good to know more about the family.

Hi, Im looking for anyone who is descended from Joseph Rowson born 1865 in Liverpool and his wife Jane Mitchell also born in Liverpool around 1865; unfortunately the couple seperated before 1901. They had the following children, all born in Liverpool: John 1885, Naomi 1886, Joseph 1892, and William 1895. I am not sure what happened to John or William, but I do know about Naomi and Joseph. Naomi married William Smith who was born in Kendal in the lake district. They had three children, William born 1914 Elizabeth and James who were possibly twins and born in 1916. Naomi and William both died in 1940 and are buried at Anfield cemetry in Liverpool along with their son William who died in 1990 and daughter in law Edith who died in 1988. Joseph born in 1892 married Matilda Jane Rendell, my great grandmother, and they had one daughter Matilda in 1915 unfortunatley Joseph was killed in 1916 during the battle of the Somme. Any response would be very helpful. As for going further back in the tree: Joseph born 1865 Liverpool, his parents: Joseph born 1828 Liverpool and Jane born c.1828 Lpool, his parents: Joseph Rowson born 1793 Manchester and Mary born c1792 in Liverpool. The Rowsons farmed, I think at a farm called Llywnderra (might have spelled this incorrectly) in Forden. Emma gad a sister called Harriet who, as an married woman, lived next door to Emma in Gateacre Place, Oswestry (now Brynhafod Rd). Harriet had several children, including a daughter, Harriet, who I knew as Auntie Hattie in the 1950`s when I was a child; she died around 1960 and had no children. I remember her as v nice and very well turned-out, She was very close to my grandmother, Gladys, and to Gladys` father, Ralph, and aunt Lucy, who were first cousins to Auntie Hattie.

Hi, Amelia Hurdsman and Harriet Williams (both nee Rowson) were sisters as you suggest. You are right that there is a connection with Court Farm, Llwynderw (south of Welshpool) but it is via Amelia and Harriet's mother, Sarah (nee Gough). The Gough family farmed there in the mid 1800's. I think I have found John Rowson's parents (father was definitely William per his marriage cert) but don't know much about their background yet.

I have an ambrotype and a photo of Amelia (she may have been known as Emma and also appears as Sarah on some records). Sarah Rowson (Goiugh) was born 1821 and married John Rowson 1840. I am almost certain that it is she who appears in the 1861 census, living in Shrewsbury with a son (John b, about 1850). Her occupation is given as House cleaner and her son`s as errand boy. They share the accommodation with Joseph Bennett 42 (Lodger and Common Beggar). Her status is given as widow. John Rowson was still alive but doesn`t appear on a census after 1851. He died in 1876. Sarah Rowson/Gough appears in 1871 in Welshpool (with Ann Gough) and 1881 in Oswestry - she died at 60ish. It`s an odd story but we can`t know what happened. You may well know all this. Do you have any info on the Goughs? I live in France now but hope to spend some time in Powis to see if I can uncover any family stuff.

My late mother's maiden name was ROUSHAM. You may wonder why I am posting this on the ROWSON website. I have researched the name world-wide, and all avenues lead back to families named ROWSHAM, ROWSAM, ROWSOME and ROWSOM in the late 1500's in the three neighbouring English counties of Oxfordshire, Warwickshire and Gloucestershire. Since one of the above variations is only one letter different from ROWSON, and since they sound practically identical, I wonder whether anyone has traced their roots back before 1600 and can overlap with the same geographical area. If so I look forward to hearing from you.

Hello, have just found this website and was very interested in the theory of where the Rowson name originates from, especially the 'red sand' theory. My parents John and Angela Rowson (originally from Warrington,Cheshire) lived in Norway in the late 1980's and my Father was told by a Norwegian work colleague that the name was probably of Viking origin. I am afraid I cannot verify this in any form of written evidence as unfortunately my Father died in 1988, so you might well only consider this as hearsay, but I do think it is more than likely to be correct assumption of the origin of the name.

Hi interested to find out whether I may have any cousins/ family out there. My name is Chritopher Rowson and my father's family originate from St Helens. He was apparently one of 13 children. Thats about all I know, other than a vague memory of visiting my grand parents in Friar Street,St Helens when I was about 5/6 years old (back in the 1960s). Some of my relations live in Vancover and other parts of North America. Would be great to find out more - can anyone help ?

Hi. I'm descended from the Rowsons/Rawsons of Wistow, Yorkshire. Anyone else got ancestors from this line? They appear to have been in Wistow since at least the 17thC, where Thomas Rawson was the vicar around the 1650s. My ancestor is Sarah Rowson, who married William Thompson in Wistow in 1714. I'd love to hear from other Yorkshire Rowsons. You can find the Wistow Rowsons on Genes Reunited. Cheers, Penny

Dear Rowsons I live in the UK - my family came from Lincolnshire, but I am now in London. I will be pleased to communicate with other Rowsons on family history etc if they wish to do so, but my main reason for making contact now is to say that I have recently set up a website: richardrowson.org This website is to do with my work - I have published a book on professional ethics called Working Ethics - and the website is a forum where people can discuss the ideas in the book. I hope this will not cause confusion with the website: richardrowson.co.uk. I tried to find alternative addresses, but unfortunately "working ethics" and other appropriate domain names have already been used. As my book is not poised to become an airport best seller, I'm sure not many people will in fact be confused, but I thought it polite - and friendly - to let you know about it, and also to tell you what another Rowson is up to. Best wishes to whoever reads this. Richard

Finding FamilyDate posted:25th Aug 2004, 00:10
From: Don Rowson
I was looking through this site - very good it is too - and noticed that in 2001 you had a letter from a Michael Rowson. Mike and I are cousins and the first and last time we saw each other was back in 1969. He was a young fella and I was 20. We found each other awhile back through Genes- connected and have collaborated along with several other people, some who don't even have Rowson roots, to finding more positive connections to our ancestors, not tenuous ones. We eventually discovered that our ggg grandparents were John and Elizabeth not Edmund and Annis as had been handed down through the family. Suppose that was a bit of a shock for the aunts and uncles! I don't know because I don't live over there and haven't had any reaction back from them! Through approaching a person from the result of "Googling" Rowson I have found an adopted cousin and he has been able to confirm for me info about another branch of the family. We have found out a lot by joining the rootsweb.com genealogy lists. Google (or whatever) roots- web and follow it through. 'Subscribe' to a list, watch the letters of other listers and don't be afraid to ask quest- ions, it's the way to learn. Get into the archives of the lists - you don't have to be a member of a list to do so - and you may find someone who is looking for the same family or is connected in some way. Go for it and enjoy. Mind you it is addictive. If anyone wants to contact me please do. Mike and my family were originally from around the Shrews- bury, Shropshire area and then moved north to Manchester. Most of them are still around the Yorkshire, Cheshire and Manchester areas. All the best, Don in New Zealand

I have found out the origin of the name Rowson - We also have a coat of arms. Castle with 4 towers on black and blue. Raven with a ring - aparently means defense and prophesy. Aparently the name dervies from the 'Son of' eg Son of Rauf, The English surname Rowson is of Patroniymic origin, being the first name of the father, Rowson means Son of Ralph or Rauf. Records date back to the 14 century - I have a family tree completed up to the 16 century - Earl of Shrewsbury was a 'Rowson' A lot of my family are 'Orlando' Rowson or Landie.
